Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL
We make clothing for everybody and every body. Founded in 2013 by Designer Shao Yang, we operate at the crossroads of modern design and heritage craftsmanship. We differ from the one-size-fits-all mentality of contemporary tailoring, much like a handwritten note stands apart from an automated email. Instead, our process is a deliberate dialogue with you—a process that transforms precise measurements into garments as pure as Faiveley Musigny Grand Cru.
Our Atelier is located at 511 Canal Street, New York, NY 10013 and operates by appointment only. This ensures every consultation receives our full attention.
Begin by booking your Design Session via our online system. Alternatively, feel free to call, text, email, or DM us. If your schedule demands a particular timing or you need an expedited slot, contact us directly at 212.813.1014.
Consider our work as the difference between an analog masterpiece and a streamed algorithm. We start with a blank slate because your expression demands more than an off-the-rack template. Our custom approach is as specific as a director's cut—engineered precisely to your form and lifestyle, without the generic shortcuts that dominate today's marketplace.
Everybody is our client! We pride ourselves on making custom suits and clothing for everybody and every body. Our clients come in all shapes, sizes, presentations, and gender identities. We've created a safe space for all to create custom suits and clothing that affirm them and let them live their true authentic selves.
Distance should never be a problem. Here at The Tailory we work with clients worldwide. If you are not local to NYC, you can work with us fully virtually with our patented technology that allows us to take over 45+ measurements virtually. You can also catch us at a pop-up in your city. Pop-up cities include: Chicago, Washington D.C., Dallas, Austin, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Montreal, Toronto.
Yes! We offer comprehensive virtual fittings that begin and end the same way as our in person process. We meet one on one via zoom to explore fabrics, trims, and design details, and get you set up with our virtual measurement apps.
Yes! You can browse and purchase from our Ready-to-Wear collections online. Our shop features various collections suitable for different occasions, and many styles offer custom options. After purchasing, someone from our team will reach out to gather your specific measurements, apply them to the pattern, and have the garments shipped to you.
PRODUCT INFORMATION
We offer tailored clothing through Bespoke, Made-to-Measure, and Ready-to-Wear. Our range includes suits, jumpsuits, formalwear, outerwear, and occasion pieces. You can shop Ready-to-Wear collections online, or book a design session for something fully custom. While we do make a lot of custom suits, the limits are endless! We specialize in making custom clothes that affirm YOU. In addition to custom garments, we provide alteration services to resize, refine, or restyle your existing pieces.
We have an extensive library of fabric books. Our essential house fabrics range from Super 120s to Super 150s wool. Our Mid-Tier and Premium fabrics are sourced from Italy, the UK, Australia, and France, including renowned mills like Loro Piana, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Dormeuil, Style Biella, Huddersfield, and Escorial. We also have a wide selection of vegan and ethical fabric choices, including our 100% bamboo fabric. We also source premium silks and specialty fabrics from Italy for our wedding garments. Our cotton shirting collections include fabrics from Thomas Mason, Albini, and Loro Piana. Custom printing, dyeing, and embellishments are also available.
Every garment begins with a digital blueprint uniquely tailored to your physique, most often built in our signature half-canvas construction with full canvas lapels. For elevated refinement, full-canvas or handmade options are available. Every piece starts with a digital blueprint tailored to your physique. Our standard methodology—half-canvas with full canvas lapels—ensures a harmonious balance of form and movement.
Yes — whether it's a piece you own or a design you've seen elsewhere, we can recreate the style and fit using reference images or physical samples. Our consultant will guide the process to ensure your vision is accurately translated into a finished garment.
SERVICE TYPES
Our fully bespoke service involves comprehensive measurements (more than 45 precise measurements), design sessions with visual reference boards, technical specifications, pattern development, and construction. Generally, we advise about 10-12 weeks. However, timeline can vary depending on complexity of the garment and personal journeys that may shift the timeline, of which we are happy to work within.
Our Made-to-Measure service bridges the art of customization with a more streamlined process. Utilizing our expertly developed base patterns, we refine and adjust each garment to capture your unique silhouette with precision—in less time than a fully bespoke creation. Production timeline: Essentials Collection 3–4 weeks, European Selections 5–6 weeks.
Our Made-to-Order and Ready-to-Wear collection brings our design philosophy into an accessible, digital format. Crafted in limited runs, these pieces offer the same meticulous quality and refined luxury as our custom services—but with a faster turnaround for today's lifestyle. Typical turnaround of 2-3 weeks.
We offer comprehensive in-house alteration services for both our own garments and outside pieces. Our expert alterations team ensures your garment maintains its tailored excellence over time, maintaining the integrity of your original design. We provide alterations at reasonable rates after purchase.
